Invisalign has skyrocketed in popularity, and it’s not hard to understand why. These clear aligners are discreet, easy to clean, and come with no food restrictions, unlike traditional braces. One concern many orthodontic patients have is whether Invisalign might affect their speech like traditional braces can. Read on to learn more about how Invisalign may impact the way you speak!

Are Speech Issues Common with Invisalign?

Don’t worry – significant speech problems with Invisalign are actually quite rare. This is because the clear aligners are crafted from thin plastic that fits snugly onto your teeth. Studies have shown that a whopping 93% of patients reported no speech difficulties while using Invisalign.

However, it’s not uncommon for some patients to experience minor speech challenges initially when they start wearing their aligners.

How Can Invisalign Influence Your Speech?

Clear aligners can slightly alter the way your teeth fit together and how your tongue interacts with them, which can affect your speech. This might result in a slight lisp, particularly with sounds like “s,” “sh,” and “z.”

Tips for Adjusting to Talking with Invisalign

If you find yourself struggling to speak with your new aligners, don’t fret. With time, you’ll get used to them! Speak slowly and deliberately if you encounter difficulties. As you wear your aligners more consistently, you’ll likely adapt faster.

When you switch to a tighter aligner, you might experience a brief period of readjustment and a temporary lisp. However, you’ll probably adjust quicker than the first time.

For important events like presentations, you can remove your aligners temporarily to speak more clearly. But remember, wearing your aligners for the recommended duration (20-22 hours a day) will help you adapt to speaking with them more quickly.

While minor speech adjustments may occur initially with Invisalign, most patients adapt quickly, and significant speech impediments are rare. With patience and practice, you’ll soon find yourself speaking confidently with your aligners in place!
